Тип задач математического программирования, состоящих в нахождении оптимального размещения новых производственных объектов (предприятий), выпускающих однородный продукт (или небольшое количество продуктов) таким образом, чтобы суммарные затраты на производство и транспорт были минимальными. В задачу включаются при этом не только новые, но и уже действующие объекты. Главное противоречие здесь состоит в том, что себестоимость производства на крупных предприятиях, как правило, ниже, чем на мелких (см. Эффект масштаба), но при этом возрастают расстояния между производителями и потребителями и соответственно — затраты на перевозку. Подробнее см. Отраслевые задачи оптимального планирования.
